About Emin Huseynov
Emin Huseynov is an Azerbaijani journalist and human rights activist who was born on December 4, 1979, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
He completed his education at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics and worked at the Turan Information Agency from 2002 to 2005. In 2006, he became the founding member and chairman of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) and remained chairman until he went into hiding in 2014.
Huseynov reported about the crackdown on peaceful rallies by Azerbaijani police in 2008, which led to his detention and beating by the law authorities of Azerbaijan. He was forced into hiding to avoid arrest in Azerbaijan in 2014 and fled Azerbaijan to Turkey, where he was detained at the border. He went to the Swiss embassy and remained in hiding, fearing for his life. While hiding, the IRFS offices were shut down by the authorities, and its members were detained, some beaten.
Huseynov was convicted of abuse of power and tax evasion while hiding, a charge which would sentence him to 12 years in prison if convicted. After almost a year of hiding, Huseynov flew to Switzerland on June 13, 2015, and currently resides in Bern and is applying for political asylum. (source)
